Virtual Food Drive in support of the Wood Buffalo Food Bank
March 31, 2020 (Fort McMurray, AB) Northland Forest Products and the Wood Buffalo Food Bank (WBFB) are hosting their first ever Virtual Food Drive in hopes of collecting much needed donations during a time of increased need and postponed fundraisers. Northland will kick off the month-long fundraiser on April 1st with a $25,000 donation and encourages everyone in the community to give as much as they are able to, whether that is $5 or $250.
A part of the community for almost 50 years, Northland Forest Products is a family run business committed to sustainable, world-class forest stewardship. Social responsibility is one of their core values and forms the foundation for how they conduct business. Northland and their employees have generously supported various social profit organizations in our region by lending their skills and making monetary contributions to important causes, such as supporting the fight against food insecurity in our region.
“At challenging times such as these, food security should be something everyone’s friends and family members can count on,” say Northland’s owners, Craig and Howie Ewashko. “We’re just happy If our Northland family can bring a little more certainty to those who need it most and encourage others, if they are in a position to help, to please do the same.”
This Virtual Food Drive came together after news of the WBFB having to postpone their Servus Spring Food Drive that was set to occur the first weekend in April.
“When Northland reached out to us it couldn’t have been at a better time,” says Dan Edwards, Executive Director of the WBFB. “Not only are we in a situation when we typically rely on that boost of donations to get us through to summer, but we are also anticipating an increase in need as layoffs are occurring and people are preparing to stay home. We are excited to host a Virtual Food Drive as it’s something we haven’t tried and is more accessible during this time.”
The Virtual Food Drive presented by Northland Forest Products will run for the month of April through a link that will be featured on the WBFB’s website (www.woodbuffalofoodbank.com) and social media accounts. Everyone is encouraged to donate as much as they can during this time.
